Here’s how it generally works:

  1. Evaporator: The chiller evaporates refrigerant inside the evaporator, where it absorbs heat from the fluid to be cooled (e.g., water).

  2. Compressor: The refrigerant gas is then compressed to a high pressure and temperature by the compressor.

  3. Condenser: The hot refrigerant gas enters the condenser, where it is cooled by ambient air. Fans blow air across the condenser coils, removing heat from the refrigerant and causing it to condense back into a liquid state.

  4. Expansion Valve: The condensed refrigerant is then expanded through an expansion valve, lowering its pressure and temperature, allowing it to return to the evaporator to absorb more heat.

Limitations of Air-Cooled Chiller Systems:

Components of an Air-Cooled Chiller:

  • Evaporator:

    • The refrigerant vapor from the evaporator is compressed into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas by the compressor. This process requires energy, which contributes to the operating cost.
  • Condenser Coil:

    • The high-pressure refrigerant gas is cooled in the condenser coil by blowing ambient air across it, facilitated by large fans. As the refrigerant cools, it turns from a gas to a liquid.
  • Expansion Valve:

    • After condensing, the liquid refrigerant flows through the expansion valve, where its pressure is reduced, allowing it to cool further before returning to the evaporator.
